Fort James is mostly a ruin but it has charm and can be combined with a visit to Russels or the newer beach bar Beach Limerz not forgetting Millers bar. The beach here is also lovely. It is quite flat around the general area so it is considered a gentle hikeable area of interest. It is possible to get there using public bus but you need to get off opposite fort road heading north near the KFC in St Johns. Taxi fares are 12 USD each way from the cruise ship dock.
